Spooked! and Other Halloween Musings

I've been musing about Halloween, a frightfully delightful holiday coming up in a few days, and what soloists might learn from this seasonal celebration. Here are some Halloween-inspired items to consider:

1. What costume are you wearing?
Pirate or princess? Hobo or movie star? The "costume" your solo business wears -- in its Web site, business card, and other professional encounters -- communicates volumes (often silently) about who you are and what you value. Pay attention to what costume your company wears.

2. Ideas in the dark can be terrifying.
I remember visiting a Halloween haunted house in my almost-teen years and, blindfolded, having my hands stuck in bowls of cold, slimy pasta and peeled grapes as a terrifying voice told me they were the innards and eyes of some ghoulish creature. Even though I logically knew what these ingredients were, my imagination translated the voice's suggestions into terrifying mental images. If you're facing big fears about your business these days, could it be the blindfold you're wearing? Get a reality check from some peers to quell those terrors.

3. It's fun to both give and receive.
As children, Halloween joy came from costumes and a seemingly endless supply of sugared treats. For adults, the delight springs from opening the door to expectant faces and doling out the sweets and appreciation. Both sides can bring giggles and satisfaction. Do you have the same balance in your solo business, to both give and receive? And is there an ample dose of laughter thrown in?

May your week be scarily magnificent!
