Who's Running Your Business?
A coaching client and I recently had a long discussion about giving up control of one's business. Often it's not noticed until things are very out of hand. Three areas frequently take over the Director role:
1. Your To-Do List.
You make a list of things to-do and tackle it, day by day. But do you ever stop back and consider how all these tasks tie into a larger goal and overall vision? Do a reality check each day to see that each task contributes to the larger picture you have for yourself and your business. If not, demote the item -- or better yet, abandon it.
2. Your Calendar.
Do you find others dictating slots on your calendar? Reclaim those hours by marking them off as your own business development time. That way you'll be able to decline that next (unwanted) request with a polite, "Sorry, I'm booked that afternoon...."
3. Your Service Providers.
If you work with outside firms such as Web designers, PR consultants, sales reps, financial advisors, or other service providers, remain attuned to the boundaries of time and control. The establishment of deadlines, meetings, deliverables, and results should ultimately rest with the person paying the bill -- you. Don't be bullied into accomodating others' schedules if it is harmful to your own firm.
Tiny businesses can be very powerful. But they need strong leaders -- individuals who have a clear idea of what they want to achieve. Define what you want in your business, and reclaim the focus and control.
